World's Oldest Wine Vessel

Discoveries in Georgia have revealed a centuries-old tradition of winemaking, identifying it as the home of the world's oldest known wine-producing vessels. Pottery jars containing traces of wine were unearthed in two Neolithic villages Gadachrili Gora and Shulaveris Gora. These findings date back over 8,000 years, making Georgia the cradle of wine culture.

Large clay vessels known as qvevri, similar in shape and function to the ancient ones, are still widely used in Georgian winemaking today. Buried underground, quevri provide a stable environment for natural fermentation and aging, preserving the unique flavor and heritage of Georgian wine traditions.
